Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls Revealed at Tokyo Game Show

Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls is the next Castlevania title for Konami, exclusively made for mobile devices. Konami revealed the game’s current build along with a trailer during the Tokyo Game Show. In their booth, Konami also had attendees try out the game in two modes: Story Mode and Co-op Mode. Does the Castlevania formula translate well on mobile? Will it be able to revive the series that has been dormant for the past several years?

Castlevania for Mobile

Castlevania fans should be excited to get to try the game, especially since Konami hasn’t released a mainline Castlevania title since 2014’s Castlevania: Lord of Shadow 2. It may be a bummer to some fans because Castlevania has been a staple in console gaming ever since it was created. The move to mobile shouldn’t be surprising, as Konami has made it clear two years back that it will be focusing more on the mobile gaming and pachinko markets. Still, the new game would be worth trying when it finally comes out.

Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls is an All-Star Game

Five characters are confirmed in Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls

Longtime fans of the Castlevania series will get to see their favorite characters again. Confirmed playable characters are Alucard, Simon Belmont, Charlotte, Shanoa and Maria. On the #TGS2019 demo, players control Genya through the game’s tutorial. It’s likely that the developers will add more characters soon, like Soma Cruz and Jonathan Morris. The trailer showed each character having their own set of skills and abilities. Previous stages, enemies and bosses also return in Grimoire of Souls. The classic side-scrolling action will feel familiar to the loyal fans as they beat down the monsters they’ve been fighting since the early days.

In the game, Genya received a letter saying that the Grimoires have awakened, and he has to help save the world. Judging by the lineup, the Grimoires must be bringing characters from different ages to the current day, somehow reenacting the events from the games they come from. Somewhat similar to Final Fantasy: Record Keeper, we might relive stages from previous games in the series in Grimoire of Souls.

Explore Dungeons and Dracula’s Castle With a Friend

In Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls, you don’t have to explore dungeons alone. Co-op play for up to four players returns in Grimoire of Souls, similar to Harmony of Despair. Players can clear stages together, with the ability to revive fallen allies. A Boss Rush mode is also available, allowing players to face Castlevania’s most iconic boss battles together.

Bounty Hunt Mode
Play cooperatively with friends to beat enemies, and see how you stack against them!

A new mode called Bounty Hunt sees up to four players defeat enemies in one large, shared stage. Fallen enemies drop loot that the players have to collect. After a set amount of time or enemies defeated, the player with the highest amount of loot collected wins. Finally, a PvP battle mode will also launch for the title, pitting teams of four against each other. There’s a lot of content in the game that will keep people playing with their friends.

Battle hordes of the undead and explore a vampire lord’s castle in Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls when it comes out sometime this year in iOS and Android.
