CoD Mobile Shatters Records: 100M Downloads in First Week

CoD Mobile is all Activision needs to prove that the Call of Duty franchise is still alive and thriving. No doubt, given that CoD Mobile broke records for the best-performing mobile game launch ever. With the help of Tencent, Call of Duty was properly ported to mobile. Despite the negative connotations mobile ports of console games usually have, CoD’s brand proved too much for anyone’s skepticism to subdue.

Breaking the Glass Ceiling

CoD Mobile released on October 1, 2020, with 3 million downloads in just the first day, as reported by Sensor Tower. By the end of its second day, it had about 20 million downloads. Within its first month, there have been more than 100 million downloads. This strong showing has been unprecedented, making the releases of Fortnite and PUBG on mobile seem weak. For reference, both Fortnite and PUBG opened with less than 30 million downloads in their opening weeks on mobile.

These downloads also converted to game hours, showing that the game hooked players in. With 25 billion hours (and counting) clocked in, gamers have cumulatively played Call of Duty Mobile longer than humans have walked this Earth. This is really good news for Activision, as getting people hooked to CoD Mobile would get people hyped up for the upcoming Call of Duty Modern Warfare remake.

Strong Release for a Strong Game

There’s no denying that the Call of Duty name helped CoD Mobile have a strong release. But to dismiss CoD Mobile’s success as motivated entirely by its heritage. Call of Duty Mobile helps itself by being a good game all by itself. Out of its 350,000+ reviews, it averages at 4.9 Stars in the Apple App Store. In the Google Play Store, it stands at 4.7 Stars for its 3million+ reviews. These ratings easily place CoD Mobile above all of the games we featured in our 10 Best Android and iOS Games for 2019 list from earlier this year.

These ratings are deserved. The game has received universal critical acclaim. For a free-to-play game, CoD Mobile gives way more than other games in the same category. It’s chock-full of content, with lots of free unlockables and has high replayability. Call of Duty Mobile rewards its players with amazing loot and prizes, with a lot more unlockables available when you purchase an optional battle pass. You could play Call of Duty Mobile forever without spending a cent, and you lose nothing. Spending money to get some bonus content is totally unnecessary, but gives you a lot more than what other games would have offered at the same price. This game even lets you play with controllers!

Call of Duty Mobile’s success is indeed driven both by reputation and by its own merit. If you’re missing out, you could still catch up by downloading the game on both the Google Play Store and in the Apple App Store.
