AcadArena, Globe Launch First Scholarship for Gamers

AcadArena, the premiere campus esports program in the Philippines, in partnership with Globe, will start offering scholarships to student esports aspirants. Called the Esports Merit Scholarship, this novel form of scholarships will be offered to AcadArena’s partner student organizations across a dozen schools across the country.

Helping in the Transition to Digital

The education sector has been hit tremendously by the COVID-19 pandemic. Schools have been struggling to transition to online learning, with many teachers and students having a hard time to adapt. Accessory to education are extra-curricular activities, which traditionally included physical sports, among other interests. That’s why Globe’s Head of Games and Esports says that the Esports Meric Scholarship will fill some of these gaps. “The education sector is hard-hit by the pandemic. With students, teachers and families shaken to adjust to the digital norm,” Dennis Christian Dominguez, Head of Games and Esports at Globe Telecom says. “Many schools are turning to esports to supplement the lack of extracurricular activities. This is Globe’s way to make that transition smoother and more holistic.”

Holistic; Not Just Play

AcadArena’s co-founder and Director of Student Programs Ariane Lim says that they want to make sure that the scholarship will be holistic. They didn’t want to limit the program to just one game title, or to even limit it to amateur competitive players. The Esports Merit Scholarship will have three versions:

Competitive Merit (25% – 100% tuition coverage)

Any eligible student from a 3-star accredited Alliance Student Organization. The competitive merit scholarship category is open to active rosters of Alliance member schools who have shown good character and performance in any of  the games under AcadArena.‍

Leadership Merit (25% – 100% tuition coverage)

The leadership merit scholarship category is open to support staff of the Alliance member schools who have shown good character and contribution to the growth of the campus esports scene in their community.‍

Family Good Game Grant (PHP 25,000 to PHP 50,000 grant)

Any eligible student from any AcadArena Alliance Student Organization. The family good game grant is open to families of players with good character who qualified in any official tournament of the AcadArena whether for the AcadArena University Alliance Cup or the AcadArena National Campus Open.

The Alliance Program

However, the esports scholarship isn’t available for just anyone who has the talent and the skills. It is offered by AcadArena to its partner organizations, members of their Alliance Program. The Alliance Program is offered to gaming or esports-centric student organizations in colleges and universities in the country. As part of AcadArena’s vision of nurturing esports at the collegiate level, the Alliance Program aims to help develop the leadership and organizational skills of their members, molding them into the next generation of esports practitioners.

Currently, the Alliance Program has thirteen members, represented by student organizations in different universities:
